Hello coffee lovers,
I wanted to let you all know about some upcoming changes at Qualia Coffee. Starting next week, we will be extending our evening hours to 7pm on weekdays and 6pm on weekends.
Also next week, we will debut a line of fine baked goods, including muffins, scones, biscotti and cakes provided by the local bakers of Paisley Fig. And, of course, we continue to offer a wide selection of freshly roasted beans and coffees brewed by the cup as well as our well-loved cold-brewed ice coffee.
And for you Brooklanders, Chris Girardot (aka the Bread Guy) will be stocking up on bags of Fresh Off the Roast beans for sale at the Historic Brookland Farmers Market, which has moved a couple blocks from its old spot and is now located at 10th and Newton Streets.
See you soon!
I wanted to share a picture of the rain barrel that DC's RiverSmart Homes program just installed for me on Wednesday. Apparently my house is one of the first 5 or so in NW to get the rain barrel (rumor is only the second, woo-hoo!).
Rain barrels normally cost $200-400, not including installation; DC provided the barrel and installed it for only $30. DC Greenworks, who did the actual installation, is working through the waiting list now, but they expect to order more barrels and continue on. The next thing I'm waiting for is the RiverSmart program's landscaping and drainage advisor to come do a site visit. With that advice in hand, I’ll be able to take advantage of the further assistance (up to $1200) they provide, such as help installing a shade tree, native plants, a rain garden, and/or pervious pavers. More info can be found here.
If you want to see the rain barrel before signing up, just email me.

Our neighbor Dolores Smith, who lives on Allison St does a lot to take care of neighborhood stray cats, including trapping feral cats & getting them spayed or neutered and released. She just emailed me that she has FIFTEEN kittens right now - I guess it's that time of year. If you might be interested in fostering (keeping kittens until they can get adopted and helping to tame them) or maybe know someone interested in adopting, email me and I can get you in touch.

Woohoo! DDOT has started the process of putting in raised median islands on New Hampshire Avenue just south of Grant Circle.
From past ANC meetings, I remember there was a controversy about this work. Some folks were against DDOT planting trees in the median. Thankfully, that objection was over-ruled and this time next year we'll have a median well on its way to being a green island in a sea of pavement, bringing shade and slowing down those New Hampshire Avenue speeders.

Vehicular Tree Slaughter in Grant Circle
Recently I came across a crime scene in Grant Circle - a vehicular tree slaughter. One of the young trees was cut down in its prime by yet another speeding driver who drove through, instead of around, Grant Circle.
Where are reflectors, rumble strips, speed humps, or at least working park lights - to slow drivers down and alert them that Grant Circle is ahead? Do we really need to graduate from vehicular tree slaughter to vehicular manslaughter before we get slowing on New Hampshire Avenue?

A dog in foster care on behalf of the Washington Animal Rescue League is missing. Berdina is a brindle/gray/white pit bull mix who is VERY friendly and was last seen in the area of Longfellow and Blair Streets, NW on April 21. The league's staff and volunteers have been looking for her and posting fliers, but with no luck so far. She weighs about 50 pounds and was last seen wearing a red, white, and blue "Obama" collar with a red rabies tag. We're really worried about her. I have attached a picture of Berdina. She's a sweet girl! Anyone with information can call Mary at WARL (202-375-7755).

Our cat got out of our house on Varnum Street (near Grant Circle) and we didn't notice until a while later. She's pure white short hair, missing one of her front legs. Got out the evening of May 2nd. If you find her, please call Dan at 202-352-0408 or Mark at 202-412-4687.
