Reason number 2000, to love living in Petworth:
- Free cyclocross racing in the heart of the ‘hood.
Where else can you get FREE frites and beer on a Sunday morning?
On Sunday, October 26, the Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH) was a picturesque backdrop for the 2nd annual DCCX Cyclocross Race. A portion of the AFRH lawn was transformed into a European styled cyclocross course which featured a wide range of terrain and obstacles. Races began at 9am and wrapped up at 3:30pm. Riders of all ages (and genders) seized the challenge of making several laps around barrier ridden course - without crashing.
Over 350 combined amateur and elite contenders competed in the event, presented by DCMTB/City Bikes in Washington, DC. Several hundred spectators cheered on the madness as riders zig zagged through dirt, gravel, paved paths and navigated grassy hairpin turns and hills. In addition to the riders piloting the course on bike, there were several points at which competitors were forced to dismount and leap over downed trees or plank barriers.
A host of local vendors sponsored the day long event by providing free frites, snacks and beer (City Bikes, Whole Foods Market - P Street, Sticky Fingers Bakery, Sonoma Restaurant and Wine Bar, DrinkMore Water, Looking Glass Lounge, CX Magazine, Granville Moore's).
For those of you who missed it this year, it’s well worth it to try to make it to next year’s event.
