Beating the heat

Due to a forecast of continuing extreme heat, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) has announced that it will open select outdoor swimming pools and spray parks from 3-8pm at DPR locations across the District on Monday, June 9. Included are Upshur pool, 14th Street and Arkansas Avenue, and Petworth spray park, 801 Taylor Street.

Through the support of Amerigroup’s “DC Swims Free Program”, there will are no pool fees in 2008 for District residents.

Thanks for the feedback, I sent out an email a week or so ago about the Friends group reminding folks of the next meeting and asking for agenda items. I sent it to the individuals that signed in on the sign-in sheet from our last meeting. Please send me and email at [email protected] and I'll be glad to forward you the information I sent out. I'll also be sending out another email this weekend with the final agenda and the minutes from the last meeting.

It was a shame that the spray park was closed this past sunday 6/8 (and irritating too, since i walked all the way from north petworth in the midday heat.) all of the local news stations were advertising that DC pools and spray parks were open for weekend heatwave use, which was misleading. i am sure there is a budgetary reason for sunday closures, but it would certainly be as well-used on sunday as it would on a saturday.

to answer your question....the spray park being open was fantastic...what a relief! i would love to talk about the schedule at the next meeting...it would be great if it was open until 8pm every evening, (including/especially saturdays), and not open so early in the day as a trade off, (in the mid-day sun it is really hard to be there...we tried on a saturday and it was just too much sun)...also, it would make sense for the community and especially working parents, that it be open on sundays...possible?
i would love to talk with you further about the Friends group, but have not received any emails or contact since the meeting last month...please be in touch...
