[from Rachel Wood]The DC Caribbean Carnival is coming June 28-29th and I'm writing an article about it for DC North newspaper. I would love to hear community comments about the parade. Love it? Hate it? I want to hear what our neighbors think.

I love it! I live in Park View, just off Georgia Ave, and it's the best event of the year in the neighborhood (certainly beats the 4th of July). It's become our annual party -- We have friends over, get jerk chicken from Sweet Mango Cafe, and drink lots of Red Stripe. Last year one of my friends did comment that it was the only R-rated parade he'd ever been to, but that's part of the fun. (People may remember that a sexual lubricant was the main sponsor last year, and all of the trash cans had lube ads on them.) The cleaning crews even do a great job sweeping up Georgia Ave afterwards, although the side streets will be left in bad shape.
The only thing I don't like is the unpredictability -- It starts at noon, but there's no way to predict when it will actually get down past the Petworth Metro, or how long it will last. In 2006, it was 5 hours, I think. In 2007, I took a break in the middle thinking I had hours to go, and missed the Haitians and the streel drum band.
