[from Amel]
Dear CM Graham and CM Bowser,
Since our last community meeting regarding shelters in Ward 1 & 4 (in April and May 2007), the community was told the La Casa Shelter was moving to the 1131 Spring Rd building at the end of September 2008. Although the community was not pleased with this announcement, we were told there will be subsequent meetings to address some of the community's concerns regarding La Casa (a 40-bed men's treatment center).
I talked to the Consys builders and one of the construction managers said he was told this building will be a women's/family shelter and that the people will move in by the end of this month! Well, this explains all of the construction that suddenly started up again AND continues well into the late evening (for instance they are working NOW on a Tuesday night at 10:30pm with LOUD grinding machines). Can someone from either CM Graham or CM Bowser's office please tell the community what is going on? And if this is true, is this a relocation of the troubled women's/family shelter located further down Spring Rd (around 14th)? I am asking both CMs since this shelter location sits on the border of Ward 1 & 4 and affects concerned, tax-paying citizens from both wards.
Where exactly is the 14th and Spring women's shelter? I cannot think of it. There are only relatively small houses there, at least right at the corner.

Actually, someone needs to clear up this confusion because depending on who in this city you ask, you get a different answer. This is what I have been told, and believe to be true: At 14th and Spring there is a womens shelter already, its been there for years and isn't moving. The building at Holmeade and Spring is being renovated to be a drug treatment center. The La Casa shelter is supposed to be temporarily located in portable trailers next to the drug treatment center. I keep telling myself this area is not a social services district.....
