Yesterday's second annual Petworth Halloween Block Party was a great success. Great turnout, very diverse, good vibe. Even the weather cleared up just in time. Special thanks to Michelle Escumbise for taking the lead in organizing, we've got a nice little tradition going now. If you were there, what did you think? Feel free to make suggestions for next year.

A friend of mine was mugged last night near the Petworth metro station in the evening. He was walking from the station in the direction of Grant Circle. The mugger not only stole from him but also beat him up a little. I've asked him to be sure to let the cops know about this, but I'm hoping everyone in the area will be a little more wary at present and also report anything questionable.
According to the Prince of Petworth blog, the Sierra Club is providing free beer tonight from 7-9pm at Temperance Hall, part of their effort to rally people around conservation issues and how to "make DC a leader in the fight against global warming".

This morning at 6:30am, my husband and I found two giant buckets filled with human feces in the middle of the street outside of our Emerson St home (and our neighbors' homes). I know this sounds completely unbelievable, but it is true. The awful, toxic smell filled the entire street and seeped into homes on the block.
After many calls to the DC gov - 7 calls to 311, 3 calls to the Mayor's Call Center, a call to Fenty's Ward 4 liaison (Ayana Rockett's mailbox was full so I couldn't leave a message), a call to the local fire and police departments - and countless "that's not in our jurisdiction; this is not an emergency; etc", the good people in Muriel Bowser's office got the Dept of Health and the Fire Department's HazMat's unit to remove the HUGE buckets of human feces. (YUCK!) This was almost 12 hours after the first call.
We've been in touch with neighbors throughout the day, and apparently there is a squatter living in an abandoned home on our street that has no working utilities. We learned that he regularly dumps buckets of poop off his porch and around the block. I'm familiar with the squatter, as he is a petty dealer on the block and major drug user.
My questions:
Why wouldn't buckets of human feces in the middle of a residential street constitute an urgent public health concern that requires immediate removal? Clearly, feces carries many dangerous communicable diseases, and in this instance, it was the waste of a high-risk person.
What should neighborhood residents do about squatters in abandoned homes (especially ones that might be a base for drug activity, or unhygenic waste dumping?) Over the years, we've taken pictures of the abandoned house and have sent them to the city. It hasn't been boarded up and now there is a poop problem...
Any advice? Words of wisdom?
Signed, Pooplexed

My friend Eric (of Thievery Corporation, and founder of 18th Street Lounge, Dragonfly, Local 16) says his new place is having their soft opening (invite-only) tomorrow night, Wed 10/17. It's called Marvin - after Marvin Gaye, though with a Belgian twist for the two years the singer spent there in his late career, where he found some short-lived rejuvenation.
Marvin is located on 14th Street just above U Street. Considering Eric's track record, it's certainly worth checking out when they open to the general public soon. Stay tuned.
Bill.

The Office of Planning would like to invite you to join them at a Retail Forum in the Georgia Avenue-Petworth neighborhood on Tuesday, October 23rd, 6:30-8:00pm at the Green Door Service Agency, 1221 Taylor Street, NW. The forum will focus on the Georgia Avenue-Petworth commercial district, and will include a panel discussion on retail opportunities and challenges in the area. The forum will also include a discussion with residents on shopping habits and buying preferences.
This forum is part of the Retail Action Strategy, a citywide assessment of the District's retail potential. The Strategy will develop approaches to strengthen the District's retail base, ensure that neighborhoods are appropriately served by retail, recapture significant retail spending that flows out of the District, promote vibrant commercial districts, and create expanded opportunities for small and local retailers. The Strategy is a collaboration between the Office of Planning, Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, Department of Small and Local Business Development and the Washington DC Economic Partnership.
This initiative is important for the city and for Ward 4 because it will:
* Support economic strategies proposed in the Upper GA and Kennedy Street Small Area Plans;
* Provide new opportunities for many existing local retailers in the Ward;
* Serve as a catalyst in bringing improved retail uses and other neighborhood investments to residents of the Ward.
For additional information, please contact Sakina Khan, Revitalization Planner, DC Office of Planning 202-442 8708.

The old Bruce School at Kenyon and Sherman will be back into productive use as a charter school. The District has now also executed the lease with Caesar Chavez School. The improvements will begin soon. The long negotiation over this lease was complicated by various environmental issues. This is good news for that neighborhood, which has long been troubled by this building being empty.

Your excited reviews created some buzz in the neighborhood and brought us some new hungry Petworthians to feed! Thank you! To make Moroni’s an even more desirable place for dining, we would like to ask you for any advice on how we can improve the ambiance of the restaurant and may be even alter the image of the place. Dear CM Graham and CM Bowser,
Since our last community meeting regarding shelters in Ward 1 & 4 (in April and May 2007), the community was told the La Casa Shelter was moving to the 1131 Spring Rd building at the end of September 2008. Although the community was not pleased with this announcement, we were told there will be subsequent meetings to address some of the community's concerns regarding La Casa (a 40-bed men's treatment center).
I talked to the Consys builders and one of the construction managers said he was told this building will be a women's/family shelter and that the people will move in by the end of this month! Well, this explains all of the construction that suddenly started up again AND continues well into the late evening (for instance they are working NOW on a Tuesday night at 10:30pm with LOUD grinding machines). Can someone from either CM Graham or CM Bowser's office please tell the community what is going on? And if this is true, is this a relocation of the troubled women's/family shelter located further down Spring Rd (around 14th)? I am asking both CMs since this shelter location sits on the border of Ward 1 & 4 and affects concerned, tax-paying citizens from both wards.
