[from Carol Herwig]
When: Saturday, June 2, 9am to noon
Where/what: Meet at the entrance to the Armed Forces Retirement Home at the intersection of Rock Church Road and Upshur Street. We will walk to Harewood and North Capitol Street and begin our cleanup, moving south along North Capital Street toward Michigan Avenue, picking up as much trash as we can in three hours.
Why: To show the potential of a walking path along North Capitol that would link existing, historic Fort Totten with the rest of the proposed Washington Central Parks sites at the AFRH and McMillen Reservoir. Connected, they could create a much needed green space, recreational space and parkland that would serve Wards 1, 4, and 5. For more information, go to the washingtoncentralparks website.
Who: Neighbors and supporters. In addition, we have sent an invitation to students at Coolidge, Cardozo and Roosevelt high schools, inviting them to earn their required volunteer hours by working with us. CSOSA support has also been requested but not confirmed. An application to DPW’s Helping Hands program has been submitted requesting trash bags, rakes and pickup. The Clean Cities program has been approached for t-shirts or other rewards for volunteers. A memo to the Washington Hospital Center’s public affairs has gone out inviting the center’s support. Hopefully, there will be a police presence because of the high-speed traffic.
