Anyone know what the story is at 223 Upshur Street? Looks like the storefront building is being nicely rehabbed (though there's a stop-work order on the front door). I wonder if a business tenant is lined up for the space.

A group of Petworth residents that formed around the Soldiers Home development issue has created a website for their wider vision. Washington Central Parks is committed to interconnected park space from Fort Totten south to the McMillan reservoir site:
www.washingtoncentralparks.org (I've added their URL to Blogs and Sites list in the left sidebar)
Reyn Anderson, one of the founders, was on the Kojo Nnamdi show on NPR recently, and had a 5-7 minute slot to talk about their plans. Here's a link to where it appears in the archives.

I would like to introduce Ward4SpecialElection.org. This is a private, non-partisan, unaffiliated effort to provide a central source of information about the May 1 City Council election. Currently, a page has been created for each candidate who has obtained petitions from the DC Board of Elections and Ethics. Each candidate's page lists contact information, website links (where available), event schedules (where available), and links to relevent websites.
In addition, the website hosts a weblog to which a variety of Ward 4 residents have been asked to contribute. I recently added campaign finance information, including itemized contributions to many of the candidates.
I invite you to visit the website at www.ward4specialelection.org.

With the recent increase in temperature, I started thinking about the upcoming spring and summer months. Of course, like most people, I started getting a little excited: no more cold, snow, ice, shoveling our walkways...
However, I then started thinking back to last summer - first summer here in the neighborhood. I remember cutting the grass and coming back into my house only to find that I had been bitten over a dozen times by mosquitoes. That's the first time I found out about the HUGE mosquito problem in our neighborhood. During the warmer months, this "mosquito menace" makes it difficult to enjoy the outdoors - whether just sitting on one's porch or gardening.
Last summer, I did a little research and it seems that the mosquitoes in our area seem to be two different kinds: 1) those that live in trees, and are a lot more difficult to get rid of since trees easily retain water which mosquitoes need to survive and flourish; and 2) the regular kind, that breed in any standing water - puddles, gutters, bird baths, etc.
With respect to the first type, my (limited) research revealed that there seem to be some neighborhoods in other states that have dealt with their mosquito problems with the help of the state government. As for the the second type of mosquito, they may be easier to get rid of with some work on our part (e.g. limiting standing water around our houses).
Anyways, I think it would be great if the community banded together to try to solve this problem. I don't know how far reaching the "menace" is but it would be great to take back our yards from these intruders.
I'd love to see people's thoughts/ideas on how to tackle this issue.

The “Welcome Petworth” banners just went up in the 4100 and 4200 blocks of New Hampshire and in front of Petworth Methodist on Grant Circle. This was done as an ANC grant, and we’re hoping to find the funds to take them down to the Metro and north of Grant Circle.

Just want to make sure readers notice the comments thread about DDOT's proposed improvements to the Georgia Avenue/New Hampshire Avenue intersection. Thanks to Garrett Pressick for the great update about the recent meeting.
As Garrett points out, in the past there has been some negative community feedback to the plan, which will improve pedestrian safety at the intersection itself and add medians on NH Ave up to Grant Circle. Email Garrett for more info. For those who wish to support or give feedback about the plans, here is the place to write:

We invite you to attend the new 'Sundays at 4:00' events at historic St Paul's Church. The church is within Rock Creek Churchyard (incorrectly often known as the cemetery). Each Sunday, starting this Sunday, until the end of June there will be (mainly free) events in either the historic church or in the magnificent St Paul's Center. The full program can be found on our website by clicking here.
The program in February will celebrate Black History Month.
St Paul's is in the magnificent setting of the churchyard. There is unlimited free parking! For further information please call myself or Mauricio Franco at 202-726-2080.

This article on Jewish life in DC mentions Petworth and the current location of the 7th Day Adventist Church across from the ROC [at 8th and Shepherd]. The building originally housed the Beth Shalom Temple. I noticed when I first moved to Petworth that the tile mosaic above the main entrance looks like the Torah.
