[from Carol Herwig]
All of the DC public schools are holding back-to-school cleanups on Saturday 8/26, between 8am and 1pm. There is a registration form at the DC public schools website, but walk-ins are more than welcome. Schools in our area include Raymond, Powell, Barnard, Clark, MacFarland Jr. High and Roosevelt HS. All need help.
Members of UNTS will be at Clark Elementary, at 7th and Allison streets, where some of the projects include painting the hopscotch court and basketball pole/hoop. If anybody has a chain net, it would be put to good use. Also, cleaning all the weeds in the preschool and elementary playgrounds. Please bring tools and gloves.
This is the wish list from Principal Brearn Wright at Clark Elementary. I’m sure the principals at Powell, Raymond, Barnard, MacFarland, Roosevelt and the other public schools in the area have similar lists. The biggest things on this list are somebody with a chain saw and tree removal expertise, and somebody to provide and mount a chain net for the basketball court.
(1) Moving the portable bleacher to the dumpster area
(2) Taking care of the remaining vines on the fences
(3) Removing the faded blue sign: "Clark ES Home of the Superstars"
(4) Removing the bushes and plants from the baseball diamond
(5) Placing treatment on the weeds on the blacktop playground area, the Headstart area, and the entrance area
(6) Painting the basketball backboard and pole and installing a chain net
(7) Sawing the tree damaged by storms
(8) Painting outside games such as Hop Scotch and others on the black top playground area and the Headstart area
(9) Removing the vines growing alongside the building
(10) Sawing a tree near the front entrance of the building
I am encouraging all volunteers to help by bringing their own equipment. Please let me know if there are any additional questions.
