[from Carol Herwig]
We received terrific news this weekend. Casey Trees has approved a grant request to plant new trees at two city parks - at Georgia Avenue between Upshur and Taylor streets and at New Hampshire and 7th between Taylor and Shepherd. The plantings will take place on a Saturday this fall. Casey Trees is counting on a big neighborhood turnout. More details will follow as we learn them, but this is very exciting because it recognizes the community support we got when we asked for signatures of support late last winter.
This could be the first of a series for Petworth. I encourage other groups to apply – the next deadline, I believe, is Nov. 15 for planting trees next spring. These projects can be neighborhood parks, back yards, schools... They look for projects that call for at least 10 trees and can do as many as 35 and ask for a commitment to water and weed. I’m happy to work with any groups who want to pursue this.
