Merrit Drucker is the former Ward 4 Neighborhood Services Coordinator, now DC's Clean City Coordinator. He passed along this info about the city's Adopt-a-Block program for anyone interested in getting neighbors together to nurture their corner of Petworth.
David Ventura, the owner of El Torogoz, told me yesterday he hopes to develop the tree box in front of his restaurant (now with a dead tree in it), that he is also interested in cleaning up the trash that often blights that entire block -- with our help. Collectively I think it would be helpful if residents in that immediate area asked the business owners there to get involved. That immediate part of Petworth is one of the obvious gateways to the community. How nice it would be for the day to come when litter was not one of the dominant characteristics of 9th and Upshur.

Hey! Toby stole my line!! On my corner, however, the ladies of the house will climb into the cars for thirty minute rides. How nice is that?!?

There's already a whole lot of nuturing going on at a corner right by me. Neighbors are out on their corner all the time, talking and socializing. They sure have adopted the corner as their own. They stop to talk to drivers of passing cars, sometimes even reaching in and shaking hands. Oh, that's not what you have in mind?
