[from Kendall Bentz]
I just saw this on the Washington Post site in Marc Fisher's blog. About Ken Rubotzky and his Torta Bakery... Nice mention of Petworth News.
Good luck Ken, we are all pulling for you. Any more indication on what the menu items will now be to get us all salivating?

My thanks go to Mr. Roth, Bill Crandall, and Joe Martin.
I have turned off the alarm. Sorry for the disturbance, I received a warning from the police. We have fixed the problem--I am hoping there will not be a next time with the alarm. There was no break-in.
Our difficulty and delay in opening is that we had to change our business plan when we were advised we could only retail bakery items--no exceptions. And, the city does not refund your cash when they erroneously fine you. When we won our appeal against the city, they kept the cash and credited our tax account. It's taken us months to replenish our cash reserve in order to open.
We have financing lined up with a new bank in town. I have to change my certificate of occupancy (insufficient for retail) and apply for a public space permit, as well as purchase more equipment for retailing. I am hoping these are the last hurdles to opening. I am estimating another month to open.
Thanks Petworth, for looking out for us.

Wasn't Torta Bakery expected to open months ago? Anyone know what is going on?

I just spoke to Ken at his home number and alerted him to the situation.

Does anyone know how to get in touch with Ken Rubotzky? The alarm on his building has been going off for about three or four hours, and the cops are here.... It's now 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday August 9.

Can someone tell me when and where this bakery will be opening on Upshur? I would love to check it out!

Congratulations to Ken Rubotzky.
Maybe he will celebrate by baking a really big Petworth pie.
