Subject: Metro Yellow Line Extension to Ft Totten
Dear Friends:
There was a somewhat misleading article in today's Washington Post on our proposal to fund an off peak extension of the Yellow Line from Mt. Vernon Square (where it now stops) to Fort Totten where it will connect with the Red Line. This extension will also provide mid city subway stops with a direct route to National Airport.
Here are the facts:
- My proposal for this extension will be entirely funded by the DC government. It is not a great expense in the scheme of things (a total of about $1.5 million in operations for a six month period, plus $1.25 million for one time capital expense including signs.)
- Action is anticipated as part of the Metro Budget Committee (which I now chair) in connection with the FY07 budget process.
- The extension is a low cost yet important enhancement for DC rail services. It will contribute significantly to the transportation access for our new Target and other retail.
- Yesterday's committee review was not an action item, only an information item. Action will follow.
There is strong DC support for this enhancement, and I have every reason to believe it will go forward.
Your continued enthusiasm for this is making a difference!
Bests,
Councilmember Jim Graham
