For those interested, on the agenda for the March 14th ANC 4C meeting will be a presentation about the application to develop 4136 Georgia Avenue NW (at Upshur). That's at the current location of the Shell Gas Station at the juncture of Kansas, Georgia & Upshur.
The developer wants to construct a seven-story, 61-unit residential condominium building with three, ground-level, retail spaces. All but four of the condominiums would be at market rates; the four others would be "affordable." There would be 12 two-bedroom units, 36 one-bedrooms units and 13 studios.
The proposed development sits in SMD 4C07, represented by Commissioner Shanel Anthony.
My own personal thoughts: Georgia Avenue from about this point south can handle these larger proposals. I also think of more people on the sidewalks to go to retail stores and sit-down restaurants. More people usually means safer streets. More people for the currently existing businesses in the area.
I plan to start a blog soon... and my opening foray will probably be based on a conversation with one of our seniors recently who spoke of how Georgia Avenue was once "beautiful" and how she and her neighbors loved to take leisurely strolls on Georgia Avenue, shop ("There was a great dress shop there!") and dine in the sit-down restaurants.
Wouldn't it be nice if Georgia Avenue had that feel again?
Joe
