Here's a link to the Whole Foods corporate site. On the right, click on "Suggest a New Store Location" (um, that's Petworth, not Columbia Heights). Dare to dream, maybe a few hundred emails will get some traction:

As someone who moved within the past year from Cleveland Park...and a regular customer at YES Gourmet, I would be ecstatic if they followed suit! Whole Foods would be a wonderful addition as well, but in the short term, I'm all for keeping the community feel by expanding and supporting our local businesses.

There's a Yes Market, also, on the 600 block of Pennsylvania Avenue SE, Eastern Market area. Good quality foods, coffees, cheeses, breads, canned goods, produce, vitamins, cosmetics and toiletries, wines and beers. A medium-sized version of Whole Foods. What a relief it would be have that option here. Kudos to the Neighborhood Development Company for their efforts to bring Yes Market to Petworth.

The developers of the apartment building proposed for Georgia and Taylor said they have strong interest from Yes! Natural Market for the street-level retail space. This is a project that will likely break ground in June and be completed a year later. Nothing's settled yet, expressions of community support could certainly help seal the deal.
For those that don't know Yes Market, there's one at Cleveland Park and another in Adams Morgan. They are a very good small to medium size grocery with decent prices and a good, practical selection of organic and natural foods. Of course it might not compete on the scale of a Whole Foods or Harris Teeter but I think it would find a nice niche in the community.

Ok. I sent an email to Whole Foods asking them to please consider Petworth over Columbia Heights last week. This morning I emailed MOM to add my voice to the others about the possibility of one of their markets opening here in our neighborhood. Finally, I just sent an email to Harris Teeter through their website asking them to consider Petworth for a location as well. It's my favorite grocery store, and I figured with what I had heard recently about their troubles opening in Adams Morgan and the tidbit about them opening at the site of an old Safeway in MD, it was worth a shot. I hope to get a response from them soon providing me with an address for someone in the company who deals with scouting new locations. I'd be happy to post that info here if anybody else is interested in contacting them. Are there any other good grocery chains out there I'm missing? Give me an address, I'll write a letter!

Yes!! Of course! MOM -- wish I'd thought of that first. Great idea. I'll send in a request to them, as well.

I recently saw an article about an old Safeway in MD which was closing and being replaced by a Harris Teeter, which had me daydreaming about a Harris teeter replacing our Safeway at Georgia and Randolph St.

Great idea. I just e-mailed them.
Yes! Organic Market is another local chain that could be a good fit for Petworth.

I'd love to find a local employer to invest in the community. Thanks Toby for the suggestion. I left an email message with MOM's and let them know that there was an effort afoot to attract Whole Foods. Perhaps MOMs good be here first!

In addition to Trader Joe's, there's a local chain (MD) called MOM'S or My Organic Market. They would make a great addition to the neigborhood.

I just sent in my three cents. I think that another Grocery Chain that'd be appropriate to "lobby" and might be easier to get to our neighborhood, especially because they locate in smaller retail locales, is Trader Joe's. They don't have the same degree of choice, but they're great on prices and have a lot of really good quality products.

Touche! I just sent my request:
The Petworth neighborhood in Washington, DC is part of a rapidly changing area with literally thousands of luxury condo units being built this year. Although many new residents are moving to this historic Washington neighborhood, the grocery options are extremely limited. Retail space is abundant and costs are far lower than in most Washington neighborhoods. An investment in Petworth today would be akin to the investment made at the Whole Foods location on P Street a few years ago. Whole Foods came on the heels of a resurgent residential community and then, following the store's opening, abundant retail options followed. Petworth would love a Whole Foods presence and encourage you to tap into this active community by visiting petworthnews.com.
Many thanks for your consideration,
Jenna.
