[from Sandy Hoffmann]
The next step in our effort to protect open space (and to make sure that any development that is done is well done) is the National Capital Planning Commission hearing on the Draft Master Plan on February 2.
Tomorrow (Friday 1/20) at 5:30pm is the deadline for written comments to NCPC. Next Wednesday (1/25) at noon is the deadline to sign up to speak at the NCPC hearing. Here are the addresses for the NCPC letters re Soldiers' Home:
401 9th St NW
North Lobby, Suite 500
Washington, DC 20004
Fax: (202) 482-7272

The AFRH Development listserv has sample letters to cut and paste if necessary.
The National Capitol Planning Commissions staff recommendations for the AFRH development master plan is out. I'm really disappointed in the result. The calculation for parking actually went from 1 space per 900sf to 1 space per 1,000sf. Sure, it states a significant public park must be included not just in zone 3/4 , also in zones 5/6 - but no acreage or boundaries are specified. As far as development, it doesn't address any issues that I thought were important. I would like to have thought that if the historic fence along Park Place is important then they would have required a significant set back from the road for new development. I think looking across the street at townhouses with a fence separating us will look really bad and give a bad impression of the neighborhood. So, we will have a gated community in Park View/Columbia Heights...nice.
Anyway, we MUST have a good showing Thursday (12:30 at NCPC). The fact that only 8 form letters and 21 personal letters were sent in is really disappointing (our neighborhood has hundreds of households). Sorry to be so down, but I was hoping for better....
