Does anyone know what's going on with the planned renovation of the Rec Center at 8th and Taylor? I saw the design plans at a meeting a while back (see picture). Recently DC North actually reported the groundbreaking but I don't see any sign of it.

Does anyone have a futher update on the Petworth Rec Center and if any progress has been made towards starting construction? At the meeting held in August it was noted that construction could begin as early as mid-September, but there were several hurdles to be met first including selecting a contractor. I hope this is moving along.

Most of the detail you are probably looking for will and must come from the DC Dept. Parks and Recreation (DPR). However, DPR has been very diligent on their requirements and demands for the delivery of our construction drawings and quality-of-work. What I can say is that the Drawings and Specifications are 100% complete and copies have been produced for the bidding contractors. The bidding process which will be mostly handled by the DC Office of Contracts and Procurement should be well on its way by January 2006. DPR can give you more specific dates and schedules as it pertains to their internal operations with regard to the Petworth Recreation Center's overall schedule and when we would expect to begin construction.
Because of the nature and quality of the materials specified for the playgrounds, it would make better sense to begin construction when the frost breaks in early spring.
We are very happy over the outcome of this carefully designed landscape plan and playgrounds for toddlers and school age children in Petworth. Having two toddlers of my own and no local quality playgrounds in my immediate neighborhood in Hyattsville, I will truly envy the Petworth community for receiving such a fine project, as well as appreciate your patience while we tried to secure materials and products of the highest quality. You will probably see me quite a bit on site during construction and then with my toddlers on-site to play on the apparatus after it has been completed.
