[from Joe Martin]
Right across North Capitol Street and down Harewood Road is the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center -- essentially an extraordinary museum within minutes of where we all live. You don't have to be Roman Catholic to deeply appreciate what the JPII Cultural Center has to offer. I can't overemphasize what a jewel this museum is.
This summer, exhibits include etchings by Marc Chagall. The series is titled "Marc Chagall: The Bible Series 1957." - http://www.jp2cc.org/exhibits/Summer2005Exhibits.asp
If you're a fan of modern architecture, the JPII Cultural Center is a refreshing change of design in Washington's normally staid, predictable architecture. The exhibit space itself was designed by Edward Schlossberg, the husband of Caroline Kennedy. In the lower level one finds an interest mix of interactive exhibits and films screening throughout the day. There is also a very pleasant, inexpensive cafe overlooking a small garden and woods.
I note this as a reminder that we don't have to go far to find some extraordinary treasures, right here in our own backyard.
