[from ANC 4C09 Commissioner Joseph Martin]
Reminder to all those interested to come to the PSA 404 meeting Thursday (Feb 24) at 7pm at the ROC, 801 Shepherd Street.
I am very interested in hearing from people who know of and can specify corner stores that sell "the works," drug paraphenalia.
When I went to the PSA 302 meeting last month, I learned of the role the corner stores play in supporting drug dealing. The officer at the meeting spoke of corner stores on Georgia Avenue that sell drug paraphenalia. I would like to see our communities holding these stores responsible for their actions.
Thoughts?

Thanks Joe, I will be attending the PSA meeting. I will also speak to the owners and advise them of the community concerns. Could you provide us with a letter to present to the owners, asking them not to sell the items of concern?

This helps confirm my belief that DC's chronically crummy corner stores go hand in hand with much of what ails many communities: loitering, public disturbance, drug dealing. I'm not saying it's the owners' fault, but these stores are a blight and a magnet for trouble. Imagine the difference it would make if every liquor store with bulletproof glass was a geniune, decent store (or cafe, or bakery, or whatever) that truly served residents.
It's the first rule of so-called New Urbanism: reclaim the corner store as a community asset.
