On the heels of the City Paper article about our ANC woes, neighbor Carol Herwig recently uncovered some convoluted (and pretty shady) local ANC intrigue. Here's a summary of what she sent to Petworth News:
When Carol and other neighbors learned that businessman Nabil Elberry (of Georgia Avenue's Foxy Playground fame) was running for Karen Archer's soon-to-be-vacant ANC 4C07 seat, they were concerned. So Carol investigated and dug up all kinds of odd discrepancies in Elberry's nominating petition. Like that his address is listed on the web as 916 Taylor, which is the shed for a towing company.
Then, on a hunch, she asked a neighbor if she had signed Elberry's petition because her name was on it. The neighbor said no, and gave a written statement to that effect. Carol, along with her husband and neighbor Dorothy Blackwell, found seven other forged signatures and filed a complaint with the Board of Elections.
Elberry ended up withdrawing, and in a final strange twist to the saga, wrote a letter endorsing Carol. Who's not even running.
Neighbors are planning a write-in campaign for Karen Archer, a great commissioner who has decided to run again after all.
