[from Jeff Green]
Just have been informed that DDOT will be addressing the issue with the depth of the New Hampshire medians. The medians will be dug out to a depth of 48" and the elm trees will be planted per DDOT's original plan.

Here are some nice photos by Wayan Vota, of Muriel Bowser's visit to the medians today. I see Jeff Green in there on the right in the first pic. Kudos and thanks again to Muriel, Jeff, Carol Herwig, and everyone else who stepped up to make this right.

One big reason people cross New Hampshire via the median, rather than at the crosswalk south of the Metro, is that they are walking *north* of the metro. For those walking to the northeast of the metro -- i.e., crossing to the east side of NH and walking into Petworth, not south into Columbia Heights -- there is no crossing safe from speeding cars. For example, there's no light or safe cross walk at Quincy Street. This is not to excuse illegal pedestrian behavior but merely to explain one reason people are crossing as they are.

I agree, Susan.
From what I understand, Susan, Muriel is going to be addressing the people crossing over the median rather than the crosswalk by the metro.
Not only does it ruin the median and the planting but it makes driving pretty dangerous...

It's great that everyone managed to come together to address this problem and get the medians installed correctly!
One other issue I'd like to point out though is that the median just north of Georgia Ave is getting trampled by so many people crossing to the metro and unfortunately some people are messing with the trees - I think teenagers pulling on them so some were leaning (think this has been fixed). Are there any plans to fence in part of this median? It seems like there needs to be something to discourage people from crossing except in the crosswalk - the median actually makes it easier to jaywalk now.

Our neighbors' input and organization on this have been essential and very, very helpful.
Thank you.
