[from ANC 4C Chair Joe Martin]
James Wilson of the Hands Together neighborhood organization emailed me and Ayana Rockett, Ward 4 Neighborhood Services Coordinator, with concerns about the prospects for another fast-food, carry-out place settling into an empty storefront at 4530 Georgia Avenue NW (at Buchanan, the southwest corner).
In short, he'd like something else there. He's asked contractors at the site what they're up to but they're not talking. He's been trying to reach a local realtor who's handling the property, Mr. Dodson, and is getting nowhere.
James told me he would be interested in working with area neighbors to explore encouraging other types of small businesses to land in the closed storefronts in Petworth. If you're interested in joining him, please send him an email.
From James' recent email:
"There is a lot of activity going on there and it was told to me today that there was going to be a carry out restaurant in this space. We DO NOT need another carry out with trash, loitering, noise etc on this quiet block of Buchanan Street NW. There are carry out restaurants two blocks in each direction and more carry out restaurants 3 blocks west on 14th Street. Please let me know how we find out for sure what is going on here and how we can encourage other establishments such as a flower shop, card store, gym, sit down restaurant, bookstore, hardware store or neighborhood bank."
Again, if this is a neighborhood project that appeals to you, please contact James directly through his email.
