The carry-out market at 213 Upshur St is now on the market, listed at $699,000. The MLS listing reads as follows:
Sale of building and business. Great opportunity for someone who wants a business already in process. DC lottery, wine/beer/food and everyday items. Call and go with your agent. Katie Moore 202-669-2022 (Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage).
Given the absurd shenanigans Ken Rubotsky has encountered, a lesson I learned is that we as a community need to be better organized and assertive if we want to bring back the more full life this block once had. Longtime residents speak fondly of the days when they patronized this market, felt safe walking there knowing there would be quality produce and meats in stock.
I am contemplating having ANC 4C sponsor a community meeting with reps from various agencies to explain process and give us guidance on getting this block and other areas improved. The Mayor's agencies have to get their act together and streamline the permitting process and root out the individuals who are creating havoc for the Ken Rubotskys of our world.
The Logan Circle neighborhood aggressively lobbied Whole Foods to land the market that now flourishes on the 1400 block of P, the second busiest Whole Foods in the entire country. Whole Foods made it clear that the neighborhood's activism made the difference. We don't have the demographics to get Whole Foods here but there's no reason why can't get good, neighborhood shops, small restaurants and businesses. I am pleased and grateful that the businesses that operate on the 200 block of Upshur stayed. Drug dealing there persists and that has to stop. (MPD has arrested some key players around there.)
That I see a lot of my immediate neighbors, longtime residents, most of modest incomes, traveling three miles to shop at the P Street Whole Foods speaks volumes.
