As some of you may know, a local businesswoman is planning to open a nice sit-down cafe/bar/lounge on the commercial strip in the 800 block of Upshur Street. Construction has already begun. At an ABC hearing earlier this week, a group of local residents showed up to voice their opposition to the liquor license for the establishment.
To make a long story short: the ABC has required that, over the next month, the two sides try to work out their differences in good faith before the city will take things to mediation. Most likely this won't boil down to a question of yes or no on the license but rather what terms will form the voluntary agreement. It will be important to discuss any community concerns about noise, hours, parking, etc.
This is a quality business that has the potential to be a catalyst benefitting that troubled strip and the whole community. Petworth News will publish updates as things evolve.
